The only picture I have of George Washington & Sarah Burnes at their 50th Wedding Anniversary, November of 1879. This Grand Event took place at their home in Hope, Indiana.

The home of GW & Sarah Burnes built around 1836 in Hope, Indiana. Their home is still standing. I had the opportunity to visit this home and walk through it. It was amazing to me how detailed the wood work was for those days of only having simple hand tools. They raised their 13 children in this small 4 room home. It only had a kitchen and family room on the main level, and 2 bedrooms upstairs. Crazy!

Comments

  1. The Burnes homestead is still owned by my dad and my uncle, Ronnie and Gary Ziegler. (Lillian Frances, Glen Washington, Sanuel, George Washington). They inherited it from their grandparents, Anna Fox and Glen Washington Burnes (Samuel, George Washington) who bought it and 20 acres of the original homestead in 1957 for $6,000. Glen Washington was born there in 1888. After Glen Washington moved to a nursing home in 1978, the house remained empty until I spent the summer there in 1980. Sadly I will be the last Burnes to occupy the house as it is now in such disrepair as to be unsalvageable and is extremely dangerous to even enter it.
